DeskJoin Screen is local by design.
No account is required. Screen content is sent directly between your devices on the local network and is not uploaded to or stored by DeskJoin through the streaming service. The apps do not use third-party advertising SDKs. Website advertising measurement, embedded videos, app feature counts, updates, and information you send to support are separate activities described below.
1. Scope
This Privacy Policy explains how DeskJoin ("DeskJoin," "we," "us," or "our") handles information in connection with the DeskJoin Screen apps, the DeskJoin Screen Product Pages on deskjoin.app, software downloads, and update services (collectively, the "Service"). It does not apply to unrelated DeskJoin pages, products, or third-party services that may have their own policies.
DeskJoin Screen lets compatible devices discover one another and stream a display over a nearby network. Desktop apps can send or receive a display where supported. Receiver apps render a display stream.
2. Information processed on your devices and local network
Most DeskJoin Screen processing takes place on your devices. To provide discovery and streaming, the following information may be processed or shared directly with nearby devices running DeskJoin Screen:
- Discovery information: device name, a randomly generated device or session identifier, device or operating-system type, display resolution, and local network addressing and service information.
- Screen content: video frames representing the selected or virtual display, including anything visible on that display while a session is active.
- Session messages: connection, start, stop, display configuration, and connection-health messages required to establish and maintain a session.
- Local settings and diagnostics: app preferences, the iPadOS device identifier used for discovery, operating-system debug output, and desktop log files. Logs may contain computer names, device or session identifiers, local network addresses, app and operating-system versions, connection status, and errors.
This information is used to discover nearby devices, establish the connection, stream and render the display, maintain the session, and diagnose errors. DeskJoin does not receive or store your local discovery information, screen content, or session messages through the streaming connection. Diagnostic information may be sent separately if you choose to submit a support email with logs. Screen frames are processed in memory for real-time encoding, decoding, and display; DeskJoin Screen does not intentionally save recordings or screenshots.
The random identifier used by the iPadOS app is stored in the app's local preferences until you delete the app or its data. The macOS app currently generates a random discovery identifier for each app session. A device name can sometimes contain a person's name; you can change the device name in Apple system settings before using local discovery.
3. Information sent to DeskJoin or our service providers
Aggregate feature counts
When an Extend or Mirror session starts in a DeskJoin Screen desktop app, the app sends an event name and the DeskJoin Screen app version to a DeskJoin endpoint over HTTPS. The endpoint records daily and cumulative counts for that platform and feature; it does not store the submitted app version in the counter records. These totals count feature starts, not unique users or devices. DeskJoin Screen does not include a device identifier, device name, account, screen content, or session content in this event. Our hosting infrastructure necessarily processes routine request information, such as an IP address, request time, and technical headers, to deliver and protect the endpoint. Counter records do not contain IP addresses. We do not use the event for advertising or to build a user profile.
Software update checks
The macOS app uses Sparkle and the Windows app uses WinSparkle to check DeskJoin's update feeds and download updates. Update requests may expose routine connection information, such as IP address, app version, operating-system details contained in request headers, and request time, to DeskJoin and our hosting provider. DeskJoin Screen's update feeds and files are hosted for DeskJoin.
Website visits and downloads
If you visit the DeskJoin Screen website or download an app, our hosting and content-delivery providers may process standard server-log information, such as IP address, browser or user-agent information, requested page or file, referring page, and request time, for delivery, reliability, abuse prevention, and security. The product page sends a page identifier to our counter, and download-button clicks increment download counters. We retain daily and cumulative totals without a visitor identifier. These measure page events or clicks, not unique people, completed downloads, or installations.
Embedded videos
Some Screen guides embed YouTube videos using YouTube's privacy-enhanced domain. Loading the embedded player or playing a video may send network, browser, and interaction information to Google and YouTube under their own policies. This is separate from screen streaming between your devices.
Google Ads measurement
DeskJoin Screen Product Pages use the Google tag to measure whether visits from our Google Ads campaigns lead to a download-button or App Store click. Google may receive the page URL, referring information or an advertising click identifier, browser and device information, IP address, request time, consent state, and the download-click event. If you allow advertising measurement, the website grants Google's advertising and analytics storage, advertising user-data, and ad-personalization consent settings. Google may set or read cookies or similar storage and use website signals for measurement and personalized advertising under its policies. Before a choice or if you decline, those consent settings remain denied, although the Google tag still loads and may send limited, cookieless measurement and consent-status signals. Your choice is stored in this browser's local storage and shared across the Screen and Clipboard product pages.
DeskJoin does not send email addresses, phone numbers, screen content, local device-discovery data, or enhanced-conversion customer data through this tag. Google processes information under its own terms and privacy practices. See Google's Privacy Policy and Google's Business Data Responsibility information.
Communications
The Support page accepts messages without an account. We store the product, topic, message, optional reply email, submission time, reference ID, and handling status in our Cloudflare-hosted database. Messages are accessible through our private administration area and are not published. Providing an email address is optional; without one, we cannot reply by email. The form does not automatically upload screen content, files, or device diagnostics.
The Support form page does not load the Google Ads tag. Feedback text and reply email addresses are not sent as advertising conversion events. Cloudflare processes connection information, including the request IP address, to limit repeated submissions; we do not store that IP address in the feedback record. Contact support@deskjoin.app with your message reference for help or to request deletion.
If you email us, we receive the information you choose to provide, such as your email address, message, and any diagnostic details or attachments. Please do not send screen content or other sensitive information unless it is necessary for support.
The desktop Bug Report action can prepare an email with app information and local diagnostic logs attached. It opens a mail composer rather than automatically sending the report; if the mail integration is unavailable, you may be directed to the log folder to attach files yourself. Review or remove attachments before sending because logs can contain the device and network information described above.
4. Why we use information
We process the limited information described above to:
- provide local discovery, screen streaming, rendering, and session reliability;
- deliver downloads and software updates;
- measure aggregate product use and download activity;
- maintain security, prevent abuse, troubleshoot failures, and improve DeskJoin Screen; and
- respond to support requests and comply with legal obligations.
Where data-protection law requires a legal basis, we rely on performance of the service you request, our legitimate interests in operating and securing DeskJoin Screen and understanding aggregate use, compliance with legal obligations, and consent where the law requires it. You may object to processing based on legitimate interests as described in the "Your choices and rights" section.
5. Device permissions
- Local Network: macOS and iPadOS may ask for permission to discover and communicate with nearby DeskJoin Screen devices using Bonjour and TCP. DeskJoin Screen cannot provide local discovery or streaming if this permission is denied.
- Screen & System Audio Recording on macOS: macOS uses this permission category before an app can capture a display. DeskJoin Screen uses it when a Mac sends an Extend or Mirror display. The current version captures screen video frames only and does not intentionally capture or transmit system audio.
You can review or revoke permissions in Apple system settings. Revoking a required permission prevents the related DeskJoin Screen feature from working but does not affect unrelated device functions.
7. Data retention
- Screen content: processed in memory during a session and not retained by DeskJoin.
- Local identifiers and settings: retained on your device until reset, app-data deletion, or app removal, depending on the platform and setting.
- Aggregate counters: may be retained as daily and cumulative totals because they are not designed to identify an individual or device.
- Local diagnostic logs: remain on your device unless you send them to support. Desktop apps rotate logs and prune older files when their cleanup runs; copies attached to a support email are retained with that correspondence.
- Operational logs: retained only as long as reasonably necessary for security, reliability, abuse prevention, and legal compliance, after which they are deleted or de-identified.
- Support communications: retained for as long as needed to respond, maintain support history, resolve disputes, and meet legal obligations.
Retention periods can vary based on the nature of the record, security needs, and applicable law.
8. Your choices and privacy rights
You can control DeskJoin Screen information in several ways:
- stop an active session at any time;
- deny or revoke Local Network and Screen Recording permissions;
- use DeskJoin Screen without an internet connection, which prevents update checks and aggregate feature-count events while preserving supported local-network features;
- change your Apple device name before advertising it to nearby devices; and
- remove local app settings and the stored iPadOS discovery identifier by deleting the app and its data.
- allow or decline the Google Ads consent settings described above through the choice shown on DeskJoin Screen Product Pages. Declining does not stop all Google network requests.
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to request access, correction, deletion, restriction, portability, or objection regarding personal information we control, and to withdraw consent where processing is based on consent. You may also have the right to complain to your local data-protection authority. To make a request, email us using the address below. We may need to verify your request, and some rights are subject to legal exceptions. Because most DeskJoin Screen data remains only on your devices or exists as non-identifying aggregate counts, we may not have data that can be linked back to you.
9. Security and local-network notice
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures appropriate to the limited information we process. Internet requests for update checks and aggregate counts use HTTPS. No system can be guaranteed completely secure.
DeskJoin Screen's screen stream is intended for trusted local networks. The current local streaming protocol does not provide application-layer end-to-end encryption. Someone with access to an untrusted or shared network and sufficient technical capability could potentially observe or interfere with local traffic. Use DeskJoin Screen only on networks and with devices you trust, secure your Wi-Fi, and end the session when it is no longer needed.
10. International processing
DeskJoin and its service providers may process website, update, support, and operational information in countries other than where you live. Those countries may have different data-protection laws. Where required, we use legally recognized safeguards for international transfers.
11. Children's privacy
DeskJoin Screen is a general-purpose utility and is not directed to children under 13 or the minimum age required by local law. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, contact us so we can review and delete it where appropriate.
12. Third-party links and software
The Service uses Google Ads on eligible product pages and YouTube in some guides. The macOS app incorporates Sparkle and the Windows app uses WinSparkle for updates. Third-party websites, embedded video, and independently provided software are governed by their own terms and privacy practices. This Policy does not control information a third party collects independently from DeskJoin.
13. Changes to this Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as DeskJoin Screen changes or as legal requirements evolve. We will post the revised Policy on this page and update the effective or last-updated date. If a change is material, we will provide additional notice where required by law.
