Your clipboard travels between your computers.
DeskJoin Clipboard shares text, images, and files directly between connected computers on your local network. This sharing does not upload your clipboard or file contents to DeskJoin. Website visits and software update requests are separate internet connections. The current local transfer protocol does not provide end-to-end encryption or device authentication: use it only with devices and networks you trust.
1. Scope
This Privacy Policy explains how DeskJoin ("DeskJoin," "we," "us," or "our") handles information in connection with DeskJoin Clipboard, its product pages at deskjoin.app/clipboard, downloads, and update services (the "Service"). DeskJoin Clipboard is free software for sharing clipboard content and files between Windows and macOS computers on the same local network. It is a separate product from DeskJoin Screen.
Features and operating-system integration may vary by platform and version. Windows-specific behavior is identified below. This Policy does not describe Screen's display streaming, screen-recording permissions, or Extend and Mirror usage events.
2. Information processed on your devices and local network
To discover computers, maintain a connection, and share content, DeskJoin Clipboard processes the following information on your devices and exchanges relevant information with nearby or connected devices:
- Discovery and connection information: computer names, operating-system information, local network addresses, service information, connection settings, and session identifiers. A computer name may contain a person's name and can be visible during local discovery.
- Clipboard text and images: supported content copied while connected is read from the operating-system clipboard and written to the connected computer's clipboard. This may include sensitive information you copy, such as a private message or password.
- Files and folders: names of selected items, relative paths, sizes, transfer identifiers, integrity checks, and file contents are processed to perform supported transfers. File contents are transferred when you paste on the receiving computer. The receiving computer selects the destination locally; the transfer request does not send its absolute destination path to the sender.
- Session messages: connection, disconnection, capability, heartbeat, progress, cancellation, and transfer-completion messages.
- Local preferences and diagnostics: the Windows app stores remembered computer names and reconnection preferences locally. Technical debug output can include connection addresses, identifiers, status, and errors.
DeskJoin does not receive or store these local clipboard and file contents through the sharing service. On Windows, clipboard monitoring starts after a connection is established and stops when disconnected. A connected clipboard can update automatically; there is no separate approval prompt for every copied text or image.
Windows file transfers use local temporary markers and staging files to detect a paste destination and receive data. A supported Cut operation may delete source items after the receiving computer confirms completion and the sender's safety checks pass. Copy leaves the source in place. Other apps with access to the receiving clipboard or destination files may also read the content; their handling is outside DeskJoin's control.
3. Information sent to DeskJoin or our service providers
Software update checks
The Windows app uses WinSparkle to check DeskJoin's HTTPS update feed and download updates. These requests expose routine connection information, such as IP address, request time, and technical request headers, which may include app or operating-system version information, to DeskJoin and its hosting provider. They do not require sending your clipboard or transferred file contents. The Windows implementation preserves WinSparkle's initial automatic-check prompt and saved update preferences, and offers a manual update check.
Website visits and downloads
Our hosting and content-delivery providers may process IP addresses, browser or user-agent information, requested pages or files, referring pages, and request times to deliver and protect the website, downloads, and update feed. The Clipboard product page sends its page identifier to DeskJoin's website counter, which increments an aggregate total. That event does not include clipboard contents, file contents, or a device name. Routine network request information is still processed by the hosting infrastructure.
The Clipboard website does not use advertising pixels or cross-site tracking. Screen's Extend and Mirror counters are not Clipboard features.
Communications
If you contact us, we receive your email address and the message, diagnostics, or attachments you choose to send. Avoid sending passwords, private clipboard contents, or confidential files. Review and redact diagnostic material before sharing it with support.
4. Why we use information
We process information to provide discovery, clipboard synchronization and file transfer; remember connection preferences; deliver the website, downloads and updates; understand aggregate website use; diagnose failures and protect the Service; respond to requests; and meet legal obligations.
Where applicable law requires a legal basis, we rely on providing the service you request, legitimate interests in operating and securing the Service, legal obligations, and consent where required.
5. Device access and permissions
- Local network: the app needs to discover and communicate with nearby computers. Windows Firewall or your operating system may request permission. The current Windows connection uses IPv6.
- Clipboard: the app reads and writes supported clipboard content to synchronize connected computers. Permission prompts and controls depend on the operating system.
- Files: supported transfers read selected source items and write to the destination you paste into. Cut and confirmed replacement operations may also remove or replace files. Windows monitors relevant file-system notifications to identify paste destinations.
Denying required access prevents the related feature from working. Clipboard sharing does not need to stream or record your display; a copied screenshot is handled as an image in the clipboard.
7. Retention
- Clipboard content: disconnecting clears pending synchronization work but does not erase content already written to an operating-system clipboard, clipboard history, or another app. Those copies follow the device's settings and the receiving app's behavior.
- Transferred files: completed files remain in the receiving destination until you remove them. Disconnecting or uninstalling the app does not recall those copies. Temporary transfer artifacts are cleaned up as part of transfer handling; interruptions may leave local artifacts.
- Windows preferences: remembered computer names and reconnection state are stored in
%LOCALAPPDATA%\DeskJoinClipboard\connections.conf. Manual disconnection removes the selected peer's remembered entry. Update preferences are maintained locally by WinSparkle. - Website totals: aggregate counters may be retained as cumulative totals.
- Operational and support information: retained as reasonably needed for delivery, security, troubleshooting, support history, and legal obligations. Retention depends on the type of record and applicable requirements.
8. Your choices and privacy rights
You can disconnect or quit the app to stop sharing, cancel an active file transfer, review device and firewall permissions, change your computer name before discovery, manage update preferences, and remove local app data. Do not copy sensitive content while connected unless you intend to share it. Closing the Windows transfer window only hides it; use Cancel to stop a transfer.
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, or obtain a copy of personal information we control, object to processing, withdraw consent, or complain to your data-protection authority. Contact us below to make a request. Verification and legal exceptions may apply. We cannot delete clipboard contents or files held only on your devices or another recipient's computer.
9. Security and local-network notice
Local does not mean encrypted. The current Clipboard TCP protocol does not provide application-layer end-to-end encryption or authenticated device pairing. Device names and transfer tokens are not a substitute for verifying a device's identity. Someone with access to the network and sufficient technical capability may be able to observe or interfere with traffic.
Use trusted computers and a trusted, secured local network. Stop sharing when you no longer need it. HTTPS protects the configured Windows update connection, and signed updates help verify update authenticity; these protections do not encrypt clipboard or file-transfer traffic. No system can be guaranteed completely secure.
10. International processing
Website, update, and support information may be processed by DeskJoin or service providers in countries other than yours, where data-protection laws may differ. Where required, legally recognized safeguards apply to international transfers. This is separate from direct sharing between your computers.
11. Children's privacy
DeskJoin Clipboard is a general-purpose utility and is not directed to children under 13 or the minimum age required by local law. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Contact us if you believe a child has provided personal information to us so we can review and delete it where appropriate.
12. Third-party links and software
The Windows app incorporates WinSparkle for updates. External websites, operating-system clipboard history or synchronization, backup services, and other apps have their own terms and privacy practices. This Policy does not govern information those services collect independently.
13. Changes to this Policy
We may update this Policy as Clipboard's features or legal requirements change. Revisions will appear on this page with an updated date, with additional notice for material changes where required by law.
